Our First Time Anchoring!

September 13, 2019

I know, that’s kind of pathetic. We’ve had the boat for over a year now, and we just had our first anchoring day trip. I blame the wedding prep, and Key West prep for that. Those two things pretty much ate up all of “free time” since we’ve owned RumHaven.

Finding Our Happy Place

But we did it! We’re finding our happy place here in Key West, and we’re finally getting to use the boat for the reasons we purchased her: anchoring, diving, snorkeling, fishing, etc.

The first time anchoring meant some learning curves of course. We realized we didn’t have an anchor bridle or anchor snubber, so we created our own with two mooring lines and two really think (and expensive) clips from West Marine. Hey, it’s not the prettiest set-up. But, it does its purpose in keeping the tension off of the anchor windlass, and distributing the weight to the two front cleats.

We also learned that our anchor rinse down hose was old, crusty, and trapped under the 300ft of new anchor chain we loaded into the locker when we purchased RumHaven a year ago. Luckily, we had an equally old and crusty hose to replace it, so that we could rinse down our new anchor chain with fresh water as we stowed the anchor away.

Video Highlights

Check out the video for highlights of our first anchoring trip! Including sweet aerial footage of RumHaven, and a sneak peak of what the boat looks like when snorkeling underwater.

We also continue our tail of “Marine Industry Woes,” as Will tells the story about getting our little white NextGen “fixed”… if that’s what you want to call it.

A Southern Maryland girl who traded northern rivers for that Gulf water goodness. Growing up around boats, full time #boatlife was a natural fit for the “iff” of Team Wiff.
