Renovating the boat was one thing… downsizing to fit everything we owned on the boat was another! Since moving to Florida, we had purchased nice pieces of living room, dining room and bedroom furniture that clearly wouldn’t fit in the boat.
Not only that, but we seemed to have acquired endless kitchen knick-knacks and home decorations, on top of the car parts, tools and DIY projects we stored outside on our lanai.
We knew we’d need a storage solution, as all of this was not coming with us on the boat. But our goal was to sell as much as possible, and end up with the smallest/cheapest storage unit we could swing.
We did pretty good! Luckily we weren’t too attached to our belongings like some people are after 20 years of collecting “things.” Actually, it felt good to purge the closet of unworn clothing, shoes, jewelry, bags and accessories. Craigslist and LetGo became our go-to selling platforms, where we dealt with a bunch of tire-kickers, low-ballers and everything in between.
With that said, we did manage to sell a decent amount, including three different TV’s, an entire bedroom set, our home-made outdoor furniture, the grill, a few office items and finally (literally 2 days before we moved) the huge sectional couch that certainly was NOT fitting in the storage unit.
Everything that didn’t sell was donated to Goodwill, with the exception of a few items that were granted a second chance at life in storage.
The week leading up to “storage day” was hectic. There were boxes everywhere, and piles of things waiting on a box to call home.
We took apart as much furniture as possible, leaving nothing but a mattress on the floor and suitcases of clothing to move on the boat with us. The cats were perplexed, as were we.
We loaded and unloaded the moving truck into our storage unit in one day – Just the two of us!
We even managed to cheers our mikes hard lemonade at the end of the day, anxiously awaiting the BIG DAY, aka our maiden voyage to our new marina in the days to come.
Leave some love
